Third Wave Coffee Franchise Cost in India 2027: Facts And Alternatives

on Oct 23, 2026 | 176 views

Quick Answer: Is There a Third Wave Coffee Franchise in India?

No. Third Wave Coffee doesn't sell franchises in India right now. Every cafe is owned and run by the company itself. That's the COCO model, and company statements reported through August 2026 say there are no immediate plans to change it.

We checked the brand's own website too. There's no franchise page, and the "Partner with Us" form only deals with wholesale coffee supply.

So where does the "₹25–50 lakh franchise cost" you keep seeing come from? Third-party blogs. Not the company.

A few facts you can check:

  • The 250th cafe opened in Lucknow on 24 September 2026

  • About 320 cafes are planned by March 2027 (end of FY27)

  • ₹408 crore was raised in August 2026, led by WestBridge Capital

  • Third Wave pays for its own leases, fit-outs and openings

The rest of this guide explains what that means for an investor, and where your money can go instead.

Will Third Wave Coffee Offer Franchises in 2027?

Probably not, going by everything published so far. Here's why.

  1. The company calls itself COCO. A June 2026 report says it has no immediate plans for a franchise-led approach.

  2. Its website has no franchise page. The Partner with Us form only offers wholesale or bulk orders, and brewing Third Wave coffee in your own cafe.

  3. Management wants to go from about 240 cafes to 400–500, and still stay COCO. Its roastery is built to support up to 700 stores.

  4. It just raised ₹408 crore. It doesn't need franchisee money to grow.

Can that change? Sure. "No immediate plans" isn't a promise. But today there's no published franchise fee, royalty, territory rule or disclosure document from Third Wave. If someone quotes you one, it didn't come from the company.

One more thing. The cafe count on the brand's own "Our Story" page says 204, which is older than the 250+ in September 2026 news. For current numbers, go by recent news.

Third Wave Coffee Franchise Cost: The Reality Behind the Numbers Online

There's no official franchise cost, because there's no official franchise. The numbers floating around are third-party estimates, and they don't agree with each other.

Third-party estimates

Reported investment

Space

Other claims

StartupTalky (2025)

₹30–70 lakh

500–1,000 sq ft

6% royalty, 20–25% ROI

FranchiseIndia (2025)

₹25–50 lakh

500–1,200 sq ft

15–25% margin, 2–3 year payback

Daalchini (2026)

₹25–50 lakh

500–1,000 sq ft

Marked as estimates by the author

Why we wouldn't plan around these:

  • None of them points to a Third Wave document or a named company contact.

  • The range keeps shifting. The top end jumps from ₹50 lakh to ₹70 lakh.

  • A royalty or franchise fee only makes sense if a franchise programme exists. Here, it doesn't.

What does Third Wave say about returns? Only that its unit economics are strong and store payback is healthy. It hasn't published an investment figure per cafe. So if you see a precise "Third Wave franchise fee" somewhere, ask where it came from.

The COCO Truth: What Company-Owned cafes Mean for Your Money

COCO, Company-Owned-Company Operated. What that tells you about the brand:

  • The CEO says every new store has to make money. That's a lesson learned. When the chain hit around 110 cafes, fast growth strained the economics.

  • Third Rush, its dessert menu launched in April 2026, sells inside existing cafes in the evening. Rent runs all day, but coffee rush hours don't.

What it means for your money:

  • You can't buy into one cafe. They're not for sale.

  • You only see the brand's results at company level, where it's still working towards break-even.

  • A company that funds its own growth has no reason to go looking for franchisee cash.

Where Third Wave Is Opening cafes Through 2027

Third Wave is moving from the big metros into Tier 2 cities and highway sites. It's doing all of it through its own openings.

  • Core metros: Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai

  • Recent entries: Ahmedabad, Mangaluru, Agra, Kolkata (June 2026, its first in East India), Visakhapatnam, Jalandhar and Lucknow

  • Planned this financial year: Ludhiana, Manipal, Kochi and Amritsar

  • Being evaluated: Guwahati, Ranchi, Patna and Bhubaneswar

  • Site types: dense residential areas, business districts, airports and expressways like the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway

If you own a good commercial space in one of these cities, you're closer to what Third Wave needs than a franchisee would ever be.

5 Practical Ways to Invest in India's Specialty Coffee Growth in 2027

  1. Franchise a cafe brand that does franchise. Costs vary a lot. A 2026 third-party guide puts Chai Sutta Bar at roughly ₹22–30 lakh, and premium chains like Costa at ₹1–1.5 crore. Use these as rough guides and get every fee in writing from the brand.

  2. Become a Third Wave wholesale partner. It's the only partnership route the company publishes: serving Third Wave coffee in your own cafe or restaurant. You need far less money, but you're a customer, not a franchisee, and the brand you build is your own.

  3. Lease your property to Third Wave. The company funds its own cafes, so it needs good sites. If you own a space in a busy or travel-heavy spot, a long lease with a strong tenant is an investment in itself. Approach the company through its official contact details.

  4. Follow the company as a private-market story. Third Wave is unlisted, and institutions have led its funding rounds. Retail investors have no standard way in.

  5. Wait and watch. If Third Wave ever opens franchising, the announcement will come from the company. Meanwhile, build a shortlist of other brands.

Red Flags: How to Avoid Fake Third Wave Franchise Offers

A famous brand with no public franchise route is a magnet for fake offers. Be careful if you come across any of these:

  • Someone quoting a specific Third Wave franchise fee, royalty or territory

  • A request for a token or "registration" payment before you've seen a written agreement

  • A franchise enquiry form on any site other than thirdwavecoffee.in or thirdwavecoffeeroasters.com

  • Promises of a fixed monthly profit or guaranteed payback

Investor Checklist for Any cafe Franchise Offer

Before you sign with any cafe brand, Third Wave or not, tick these off:

  • Franchise fee, royalty, marketing fee and technology charges, all in writing

  • Itemised set-up cost: fit-out, equipment, deposits and six months of working capital

  • Territory rights and whether the brand can open nearby

  • Mandatory suppliers and the mark-up on products you must buy

  • Store-level P&L of comparable outlets, not just "average" claims

  • Conversations with at least three running franchisees, including one who exited

  • Lease terms: lock-in, rent escalation and who signs

  • Agreement term, renewal, transfer and exit conditions

  • Training and operating support, with named contacts

  • Count of outlets opened and closed in the last three years
